Actavis

Actavis relied on EI’s vast experience in office and laboratory planning, design and construction in the execution of a 64,000 square foot renovation project at their Elizabeth, NJ facility.

The existing three story building has had many lives since it opened in the 1920s. It was originally built for use as a foundry. In the 1950s, the building was converted for the production of Milk of Magnesia. Typical for industrial buildings of the 20s, it was designed and constructed with high ceilings, close column spacing, heavy floor loading capacities, and brick masonry exteriors with stone and terra cotta accents. North facing saw-tooth clerestories provide natural light and ventilation with maximum outside air. In the 1960s, the building was converted again for use as a multi-purpose generic drug manufacturing facility.

The highlight of this project is the proposed use for the building’s third floor. Included will be new and renovated labs, new office spaces and a new cafeteria. These new spaces will be enhanced by the renovation of the third floor clerestory, which will bring natural light into the middle of the space.
