EDUCATION: Colleges & Universities / K-12

The “one-room schoolhouse” has evolved to a multi-use facility that provides a wide variety of solutions to delivering today’s education visions and goals. Today’s schools serve a wide constituency all with one thing in mind: how do we plan, design and construct facilities that will enable our children to keep up with the educational demands of a global community, while ensuring that they stay connected to the local neighborhood in which they will thrive.

From pre-school and early learning centers through advanced degree programs, whether in traditional “bricks and mortar” or the more technologically demanding “virtual” institutions, EI Associates has earned the respect and repeat business from many of our clients. In fact, there are some institutions with whom we have been collaborating for over 20 years, something for which we are extremely proud and the goal of all of our client relationships.

Our firm provides innovative design for new buildings and alterations, renovations, and adaptive reuse of existing facilities. The key to our success is our staff who have worked on hundreds of master planning and capital project assignments and are intimately familiar with the design criteria, state agency requirements, funding alternatives, and construction aspects of educational facilities, whether the need is for new construction, renovations, additions, or other campus facilities.

Colleges & Universities

Successful execution of capital projects on college and university campuses comes from years of experience of approaching each project individually, looking for that unique aspect. The vision of the leaders of today’s colleges and universities is much more global and diverse in order to meet the needs of the marketplace when the students graduate. Academic learning is being supplemented with hands on experience that was earned once the student entered the workforce as little as a few years ago. Working laboratories, biopharm development and manufacturing facilities, technologically driven R&D centers, and robotic driven clean production areas are found on more and more of today’s campuses, along with the more traditional learning spaces. Understanding the educational and “vocational” requirements of these spaces is critical to the success of these projects.

EI Associates has the advantage of being able to bring extensive experience and expertise in all these areas to our college and university planning, design and construction projects. Our staff and technical resources can handle large and multiple projects, yet we are not too large to provide personalized attention. We have provided complete design services to thirty-three colleges and universities within the past ten years. We have been recognized for our creativity and cost effectiveness within the college and university community, having have received numerous educational facility design awards annually since 1991 from American School and University Magazine. Some examples of our success follow below.

The “one-room schoolhouse” has evolved to a multi-use facility that provides a wide variety of solutions to delivering today’s education visions and goals serving a wide constituency. In many communities, the schools have once again become the center of community activity, providing access to facilities that go way beyond those of the traditional schools of the 80’s and 90’s. As parents and educators, we are demanding more for our children, and today’s facilities have to be planned, designed and constructed to ensure the flexibility to meet those demands. We have recently completed a design/build project that has earned LEED gold level status, only the second in New Jersey.

Our firm is different from many schools architects in that we are also engineers and construction managers, offering professional design services in all major engineering disciplines required for school facilities, as well as construction management and cost estimating services. This has been of great value to our school district clients who often have needs for consulting services which are not just architectural in nature. Our single source capability provides our clients with the benefit of direct communication with the entire design team, faster response and execution times, accurate and current cost estimates on which to base referenda, and well-coordinated preparation of designs and construction documents.

The NJSCC has granted our firm an unlimited ranking in Architecture, Feasibility/Master Planning, Site Planning, HVAC Engineering, and Structural Engineering. Our K-12 Design Studio has planned and designed hundreds of projects for NJ Districts which include critical health, safety and environmental upgrades and repairs, new elementary, middle and secondary schools, additions and renovations, athletic fields and facilities (synthetic turf fields being a specialty), pre-school and support facilities. Some of our success stories are found below.
