Fitness Center

As part of a fitness program geared toward improving the health, productivity and working environment of their associates, a new 10,000 sq.ft. corporate fitness center was designed for Alcatel-Lucent. The challenge faced by EI Associates was to design a non-intimidating fitness center with a sophisticated “corporate” aesthetic in an existing 10,000 sq.ft. “mechanical” space located in Alcatel-Lucent’s 2.5 million sq.ft. research facility in Holmdel. It is estimated that 2,000 of the 6,000 associates employed at this facility frequent the new fitness center.

The fitness center includes an aerobics room, open exercise area complete with the latest in A/V equipment, men’s and women’s locker room/bathroom and shower facilities, trainer offices and reception area. Materials such as natural slate, stainless steel and wood veneers complement the existing building architecture while providing a warm interior aesthetic.

A curvilinear approach was taken in the design of this facility to soften the “hard edge” of the exercise equipment as well as build upon the theme of physical movement. Visitors arrive through a circular reception area which gracefully transitions into the curved, frosted glass block partition separating the exercise area from the cheerful locker rooms and aerobic area.
